Chesapeake
Chesapeake, Virginia is an ideal city for nature lovers and history buffs. As part of the Hampton Roads region, it’s nestled between Virginia Beach to the east and Suffolk to the west. The cities of Portsmouth and Norfolk are to the North, while it reaches south to the North Carolina border. Its 22 miles of waterways include the Elizabeth River and the Intra-Coastal Waterway. This makes it a great place to enjoy outdoor activities like fishing, boating, camping, and bird watching. Add in the Northwest River Natural Area Preserve and Great Dismal Swamp, and you have everything you need for outdoor fun.
Along with arts and entertainment, Chesapeake residents and visitors can visit historical Civil War battle sites and trails. This includes the Chesapeake African American Heritage Trail and part of the Underground Railroad.
Chesapeake became an independent city in 1963 with the merger of South Norfolk and Norfolk County. The city’s history, though, dates back to 1620. It came with the first English settlement along the banks of the Elizabeth River. The area saw many battles, including the 1775 Battle of Great Bridge. Fast forward to today, and the city is filled with urban development and major manufacturing. The city continues to grow with a blend of urban and rural areas.
Fun Facts:
- Chesapeake is the site of the historic Battle of Great Bridge between British and Virginia militia forces that drove the British Government from the colony
